For the third year in a row, the University of Minnesota participated in the Times Higher Ed (THE) Impact Rankings. The 2024 rankings evaluated 2,152 universities from 125 countries/regions, comparing their efforts to conduct teaching, research, outreach and stewardship that support a more sustainable, equitable and healthy future.

An innovative certificate in Sustainable Environmental, Social and Governance (SESG) Leadership — the University of Minnesota’s first graduate-level program in this specialty — will address a growing need for professionals with the skills to navigate today’s climate, environmental and social justice challenges.

Systemwide Sustainability Student Impact Awards were handed out at the Sustainability Symposium in April. University of Minnesota undergraduate and graduate student individuals and groups were recognized for their efforts leading the way toward a future in which people and the environment prosper together. 

NRRI researchers find that size of fire matters less than intensity of the blaze. Wildfires in northern Minnesota are increasing – the number, the size and the intensity. Within most folks' memories are the Ham Lake Fire (2007), Pagami Creek Fire (2012) and most recently, the Greenwood Fire (2021). Each scorched large swaths of the state’s prized wilderness areas and challenged humans who were too close.
